5 Ways to Stop Porch Pirates

The holidays are always a joyous time filled with fun, food, family and friends. Unfortunately,  it also happens to be a time of increased package theft.  As we all gear up for the gift-giving season, more packages are delivered in December than any other month. While there's obvious convenience to having your items left at your doorstep, it comes with the inherent risk of theft as well. If you’re one of the many people who prefer to do their holiday shopping online, you might be interested in these tips for keeping your packages safe this season.

1. Pick up your packages at your local post office

USPS, FedEx, and UPS all offer services that allow you to hold your package at their facility, giving you the option to pick it up on your own time. Some mail carriers even allow for a package redirect that hasn’t been delivered yet. This way your packages will be safe and sound in a controlled facility awaiting your arrival.

2. Require a signature for package delivery

If possible, require a signature on any item being delivered to your home. This ensures the package will be delivered directly to a trusted individual and not left outside. If there is an attempt to deliver the package and you are not home to receive it, the delivery service will keep your package at your local facility for pick up, as referenced in tip number one.

3. Install a security camera or video doorbell

Security cameras can be your best friend during the holiday season. Besides deterring potential thieves just doe to their presence, most cameras allow you to check up on any packages sitting at your doorstep from anywhere at any time. If you should be so unlucky as to have your packag stolen, you could potentially have video evidence of the culprit.

4. Have packages delivered to your workplace

If you know you won’t be home during regular delivery hours, have the package delivered to your workplace instead. UPS, USPS, and FedEx all deliver to businesses during business hours, so you should be able to receive any packages during the day.

5. Install a security system

When you get a security system from Doyle Security installed in your home, we will provide you with lawn signs and window decals that will alert would-be thieves of the presence of a security system. The security system, along with the lawn signs and stickers are great deterrents of potential package thieves. The threat of being monitored will most likely discourage them from targeting your home, not only keeping your packages safe, but your whole house as well.

We want to help keep you, your loved ones, and your prized possessions safe this holiday season. Give us a call and we will work together to find the best security option for you and your family.
