Prolonged Power Outages-
Power Down Your System

After an estimated 8-12 hours without power, the backup battery on your security system dies. You will need to replace this battery unless you follow the instructions below to power down your system.

  • Locate your panel box (basement, closet, garage) and unplug the AC power transformer from a nearby outlet

  • If the transformer is screwed into the outlet, you may need to hold the outlet cover in place while you remove the screw.

  • If you are unable to locate the transformer, open the panel box, remove the wires from terminal #1 (left side) and wrap wire with electrical tape. This is low voltage, so there is no danger from electrical shock.

  • Open the panel box, locate the battery.  For standard alarm systems, this will be a brick-like unit resting in the bottom of the enclosure. Remove one of the leads from the battery by wiggling the connector from side to side while pulling, either the red or black wires are ok, from the battery terminal.  You do not need to disconnect both.

  • For standard alarm systems with a metal enclosure, open the lid. It may be held shut with screws, which are easily removed, or secured with a lock.

  • If it has a lock, try to locate the key. Alarm panel keys are smaller than house keys and are often simply left on top of the panel enclosure. The image below shows an alarm key on the left, and a regular house key on the right.

Congratulations!

You’ve successfully silenced the system, and very likely saved yourself a chunk of change by avoiding a service call AND replacement battery fees! When AC power returns, follow these steps in reverse to restore power to your alarm system.  Should your keypad show and “beep” low battery, the battery has most likely lost some of its charge/power.  You may not need a new battery right away, please allow at least 24-48 hours for your battery to recharge before replacing.
