4 Ways to Celebrate New Year's Eve Responsibly

Another wild year has come to an end, and as we wind down 2021 and look forward to 2022, many of us may be gathering to celebrate this weekend. More than ever, it is important to follow safety guidelines to ensure we have a safe and healthy New Year's Eve and start 2022 on the right foot. Here are a few tips to help you celebrate safely this year.

1. Have a plan for transportation

Many of us travel on NYE, whether it's to a friend or family members house or to a party venue. With drinks typically flowing at these occasions, it's important to plan your rides to and from your destination prior to the event starting. Drinking and driving is never the right decision in these moments, so even if you've only had a few drinks, please consider your transportation options. Check bus or train schedules, download driver-sharing apps ahead of time or have a designated driver assigned.

 2Bring your mask

Stop me if you've heard this before. As the pandemic continues to run rampant, the mask mandates have been put back in place in many states. You'll need your mask for any public transportation or ride-sharing services and in any indoor facility. Make sure you're prepared with a back-up mask in case something happens throughout the night. You don't want to be denied a ride because you lost your mask.

 3Make sure you eat!

It's easy to forget to get food in our systems when we have big plans coming up, but it's important to have a solid meal prior to any drinking. Drinking on an empty stomach can lead to quicker intoxication and cause dizziness, fatigue and light-headedness. Make a note on your calendar to have a big lunch or dinner before your plans start and try to eat throughout the night. Don't forget to mix in water as well!

4. Trust the buddy system

If you are going out in public, make sure you go with friends. On a party night like New Year's Eve, many public locations will be crowded, rowdy and full of drinks. Keep track of your friends and have an exit plan ready for everyone to make sure the whole group gets home safely. New Year's Eve is all about celebrating with loved ones and looking forward to the year to come. Have fun, stay safe and enjoy the end of a crazy year.

Have a safe and Happy New Year!
